Tell us about yourself
I wear many hats. Primarily I am a wife, a mom, a teacher, a historian, and a writer. I have been homeschooling my own twelve children for more than thirty years, teaching classes for other homeschooled students for more than twenty, and running Creative Learning Connection, a homeschool resource center for more than ten. In my spare time, my interests in teaching, writing, and researching history have led me to write numerous books, including many historical fiction titles and many more non-fiction.
What motivates you to do what you do?
My love of God has to be my primary motivation, followed closely by a love of teaching.
What is one verse that has been significant in your life and why?
If I had to chose one set of verses, it would have to be Deuteronomy 6:4-7. It sums up my belief in God and our responsibilities as parents: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
What is God speaking to you right now?
Now that my twelfth child is a senior in high school, I am nearing retirement from homeschooling and homeschooling related activities. I have very much loved being a part of that world, but after raising children for almost forty years, and teaching them for more than thirty, I am also looking forward to moving on to the next stage of my life. With my interest in history and writing, all of those come together in my books. And while I have already authored a fair number of books in my spare moments, I believe that now that I am almost finished raising my children, God is calling me into writing on a more full-time basis.
What is one of your most memorable God moments in this city?
In early 2003 my sister and I looked into opening a small homeschool resource center in Madison, something we had considered doing in Texas many years before. This time, God opened many doors to make that center a possibility, and has continued to show us since then that his vision for the center was so much larger than our own. Our small center has enabled us to help homeschoolers in the community in ways that we had never even imagined – from encouraging them to making homeschooling more affordable.
