About Not Yet Christmas, by J.D. Walt:
It’s time to stop crying in our soup about the consumeristic commercialism of Christmas. Instead of bashing the culture for making Black Friday bigger than Thanksgiving, let’s do something different this year. Let’s do Advent. Instead of quibbling over saying “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas,” let’s recover what it means to celebrate Holy Days. Instead of our cheesy slogans about “the reason for the season,” let’s practice a sacred season for the sake of the reason. Let’s joyfully embrace the fact that we will do Advent in the midst of a culture that loves Christmas but doesn’t really understand it. When the church reclaims Advent, the culture will behold Christmas.
This twenty-five day reader offers an opportunity for individuals, groups, and communities to get on the same page in preparation for the season of Christmas. Here you will find the trusted texts that have guided the church for centuries combined with daily insight and prayers composed by some of the best Christian poets of our time.

Weekly Prayer Focus: Business
“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song I praise Him.” Ps. 28:7
Again, Lord, we agree together in prayer asking for Your Hand of protection, and praising You for being our shield and defense during what should be a season of love and peace. Thank You, Jesus, for coming into a world of turmoil and darkness to be a living demonstration of the Father’s heart. May our commitment to rejoice in You and give thanks propel us through this season with hearts that choose to pray and not be in dismay! Stir up a spirit of generosity, hope and celebration in Your people as we observe advent and distribute all that You are throughout Huntsville/Madison County.
Today we cover every place of business in our city asking You to prosper our retailers, especially small business owners attempting to become established here. May they experience increase and be blessed with good employees. We thank You for their generous spirit in encouraging the community to join them in contributing to non-profits that help our less fortunate during the advent season. As You pour out provision into and through them, we thank You for the impact that Angel Tree, Salvation Army, Kids to Love, Toys for Tots and other programs will have on our city this year.
We pray safety and discernment as our citizens go about shopping, attending Christmas activities, and gathering to enjoy parades, sports, concerts and other holiday events. May Your love fill every coffee shop and restaurant. We invite You, Holy Spirit, to be the guest of honor at office/business Christmas parties and to remind one and all that You make Christmas worth celebrating! We worship You, Light of the world!
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you.” Isa. 60:1-2
