Prayers for Our City: June 8, 2020 – Family

“Eternal God, who has placed our tears in a bottle, today, we weep. We weep because every death diminishes us. We weep because of the grief of George Floyd’s family. We weep because of the explosive impact of deferred dreams. We weep because of the potentially catastrophic consequences of peaceful protests during a pandemic.

We weep because justice delayed is justice denied. We weep because of the paralysis of analysis that often impedes Your prevailing providence. We weep because of our personal culpability during these tragic times. We weep because of our sins of commission and omission. We weep because we know You are weeping.

Today, use our lawmakers for Your glory. May they strive to find a vaccine to inoculate our nation against hate, sin, and despair. We pray in Your merciful Name. Amen.”

Senate Chaplain Barry Black, 06/01/2020

We are so sorry, Father God, for those in uniform that have abused/misused their authority. Lord, we cry out to You to change or remove them and bring the corrections that are needed. Give our leaders, both civic and spiritual, wisdom to tackle the heart of this problem. We honor those officers and police departments who truly desire to serve and protect our citizens and our communities and pray protection for them in this current unrest.

Father, do what man cannot do. Join us together in a true justice movement grounded in the freedom that Jesus gave His life to attain for us all. Heart issues are always the root problem with cultural problems. So, begin with my heart and the hearts of those who represent You as the Church here in Huntsville/Madison County. Your Word says that Your peace is not as this world gives. We humbly admit we need a constant infusion of Your peace and love to release and reflect to the world around us. Give us the courage to get out there and the faith to believe it will change and heal things.

Thank You, Lord, for the pastors and leaders who are challenging other pastors and intercessors to be physically present to pray and comfort the hurting, angry youth that make up the majority of the peaceful protests.

O God, You created all people in Your image. We thank You for the astonishing variety of races and cultures in this world. Enrich our lives by ever-widening circles of friendship, and show us Your presence in those who differ most from us, until our knowledge of Your love is made perfect in our love for all Your children; through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. [Prayer from the Lutheran Book of Worship, 1978, read in the park together]
