Prayers for Our City: September 9, 2019 – Arts & Entertainment

There are times, Lord, when city officials organize and oversee the music scene of a community. We thank You that our city leaders are being proactive in assessing where we are today and what strategies might be put in place to grow it in the future.
We bless the work of the Sound Diplomacy company which was contracted by Huntsville City Council to deliver an extensive music audit and strategy to kickstart Huntsville’s journey to becoming Alabama’s first Music City. [A “music city” is defined as a city that embeds music as a tool into its collective governance ethos, across economic development, tourism, education, equity and overall quality of life. Through this 14-month music audit process, over 100 people were interviewed, over 1,000 citizens responded to their survey, and two public forums were held. What the audit provided was a look at the impact of Huntsville’s current music scene and a strategy to grow it in the future. The audit provided 47 recommendations, which were ranked in three tiers.]
Father, we pray over some of the first step recommendations asking that You oversee all that is put into place, including:
- recruiting a city Music Officer who will be accountable to a Music Commission
- amending local ordinances to be more music and performance-friendly
- re-prioritizing music education to ensure everyone across the city has opportunities to experience, perform and engage with music, no matter where they live and who they are
- reviewing the events-permitting process to create a more simple process to host community gatherings
- instituting a message where artists in Huntsville, wherever they play, they are paid fairly for their time
Lord, we do want a thriving music scene and one that openly includes the worship of Your Great Name! Call people with a heart like David’s to get involved at the ground level and help steer this in the way You want the music scene of Huntsville/Madison County to go.
